Dean, Lyle Dewey 88 May 17, 1926 Jan. 23, 2015 Lyle Dewey Dean, aged 88 years, passed away Jan. 23, 2015. He was born May 17, 1926, the son of Ransom and Mary Dean, in Bellingham, Wash. Mr. Dean served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning awards for service in the Pacific Theater. While in the Navy, he met Lucille Elma Appleman, also a member of the U.S. Navy. They married in Oakland, Calif., following their service and raised a family of four children in Portland. Shortly after his service in the Navy, he served an additional commitment in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, departing a staff sergeant during 1953. Mr. Dean graduated from Lewis & Clark College during 1952 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and taught upper elementary grades in the Portland Public School District, as well as offering evening instruction in political science and economics at Multnomah College. While an educator, he became involved in supporting local political initiatives and over a period of time, served as president of the Oregon Republican Club, candidate for Multnomah County commissioner and congressional candidate for the Third Congressional District of Oregon. He worked professionally in sales of education materials and courses for many years. Mr. Dean lived life enthusiastically, was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and classical music. Mr. Dean is survived by his children, Marcia, Bradley, Maureen and Yvonne; their spouses; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great- grandchildren. A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015, in Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086. Chaplain Mark Duntley of Lewis & Clark College will officiate.
