DR. SHIRK PASSES AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS
OAKLAND, Jan 12---Dr. Adam Shirk, one of the best known physicians in Alameda County and for five years superintendent of the County Infirmary died this morning at his home, 178 Tenth Street, after a lingering illness.
Dr. Shirk was a native of Pennsylvania, 66 years of age, and came to California twelve years ago. Prior to coming to this state he was assistant superintendent of the State Hospital For The Insane at Austin, Texas, and before assuming that position he had been for a time assistant superintendent of the Harrisburg Hospital For The Insane at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His long years of work in the hospitals of Harrisburg and Texas made Dr. Shirk an authority as an alienist, and shortly after coming to Oakland he was chosen a member of the Lunacy Commission of this county. He also was appointed a member of the Receiving Hospital staff. Later he was placed in charge of the County Infirmary, but retired five years later to resume private practice in this city.
The deceased was prominently associated with the Grand Army of the Republic and was a member and officer of Joe Hooker Post of Alameda. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Virginia Shirk; a son, Adam H.Shirk, who is superintendent of the Reliance Athletic Club of this city, and two stepsons, E.L. Harbert and J.W. Harbert of San Leandro.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 14, from the family residence and will be conducted under the direction of Joe Hooker Post of the Grand Army. Interment will be in the Grand Army plot at Mountain View Cemetery.
NOTE: 6/9/2022...I received a note from a volunteer (47872017) who was attempting to fulfill a photo request. He stated that a marker could not be found and when he had previously searched that area many of the old markers were sunken and buried or had disappeared for unknown reasons.
