"In his young days he taught school and subsequently entered Westminister college, from which institution he graduated with honors. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in company G, 10th Pennsylvania Reserves and when mustered out was the adjutant of the regiment. He afterwards joined the 191st Pa. Regiment and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1866 he was elected superintendent of Lawrence county public schools and in 1869 was elected a member of the General Assembly".
