Edward graduated Cornell University at Ithaca, New York, and was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi franternity. In January 1885, Edward, his father, and 1st cousin, Oliver Throck Morton, bought out the stock holders of the Indianapolis Times Company, and re-incorporated the business. Edward served as the Times business manager before moving to Illinois. He was appointed Deputy Clerk of the United States Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit (Chicago) in 1891, under his 1st cousin, Oliver Throck Morton. He was appointed Clerk at the death of Oliver on 12 December 1898, and held that position until his own death. In 1905, he was a co-founder of the Indiana Society of Chicago, and served as the organization's secretary for a number of years.

Edward married Cora Ruggebergh (1864-1946) in St. Croix county, Wisconsin on 25 July 1889. She was a native of Williamsburg (Brooklyn), New York, but was raised in New Haven, Connecticut, the daughter of William F. and Eliza (Dietrich) Ruggebergh. Cora, along with daughter, Mrs. Josephine Morton (Walter Gregory) Rodiger (1891-1971), of Greenwich, CT, and grandchildren Maribelle Josephine (1916-1966) and Walter Gregory Rodiger Jr. (1920-2015), survived him. Cora died at her daughter's home on 14 August 1946.
