"Harry S. Marks 2d, 78, of Abington, a longtime Army officer and a retail manager, died Tuesday of cancer at Abington Memorial Hospital. Before his retirement from the military in 1962, he had spent 22 years in the Army. From August 1940 until March 1943, Mr. Marks served at the Army ordnance school on the Aberdeen (Md.) Proving Grounds. At Aberdeen, he was promoted to master sergeant and then sergeant major. Later he rejoined the military and became a warrant officer. Until August 1948, also at Aberdeen, he was an administrative officer, then an assistant chief in the personnel division. For the next four years he served as a lieutenant and was a personnel officer, then executive officer, for the Hawaiian Ordnance Depot. Mr. Marks later served in Cleveland as a security and intelligence officer for Formosa, in the Republic of China, as part of military assistance advisory group; at an ordnance installation in Chambersburg, Pa.; and as executive officer and battalion commander in Korea. After his military service, he spent 10 years as the personnel manager at Chatlin's department store in Norristown. Before his 1990 retirement, he was a department manager at the former Channel building-supplies store in Upper Gwynedd Township. Born in Johnstown, he was a 1939 graduate of Beaver (Pa.) High School. He attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College and the Mount Vernon School of Law in Baltimore. Mr. Marks, a resident of Abington since 1962, was a member of the Retired Officers Association. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Denver Marks; three children, Harry S. 3d, Andrea Marks Maybaum, and Bruce S.; and two grandchildren. Friends may call at 8:30 a.m. today at Our Lady Help of Christians Roman Catholic Church, 1500 Marian Rd. in Abington. A liturgical service will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Avenue and Easton Road in Wyndmoor (sic), Montgomery County.
