Donald R. Allen, 80, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015. Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, in Pickwick-McAdams Cemetery, Possum Kingdom Lake. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 22, at Greenwood. Memorials: VFW Post 1186, 113 E. Myrtle St. Independence, KS 67301. Honorary Pallbearers: Graceson, Stephen and Joshua Mitchell. Donald R. Allen was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Independence, Kan., to Joseph and Ethel (McComack) Allen. He served in the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corp. Following his military service, he worked for Union Gas Company in Independence, Kan. Following a move to Lawton, Okla., he worked for Civil Service at Fort Sill, Okla., Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, the IRS in Austin, Lajes Field in the Azores and retired at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock. Don and Bettie lived for a period of time on the Zuni Indian Pueblo reservation in New Mexico after retirement. Don was active in the VFW Post 1186, Independence, Kan., and the American Legion Post 0575 in Lubbock. He was also active and past president in the NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). Don was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Allen in 2005; brothers, Joseph Allen, Jr. and Raymond "Bob" Allen; and sisters, Marjorie Denney and Marguerite Caudle. Survivors: Daughter, Ethel Steele and husband, Bryan; granddaughters, Alexandra Nicole Steele and Isabel Bryn Steele; grandson, Connor Joseph Steele; great aunts, Irma McCormick and Ferne Gilmore; and a host of other loving family and friends.
