Dr. Owen Findlay Patterson was born 27 Nov 1914 in Millersburg, Holmes Co., Ohio to Guy J. Patterson and Gertrude Luretta Findlay. The family moved to Holmesville, where Owens father was owner of the Holmes Lumber Co.

Owen was valedictorian of his graduating class at Holmesville High School and attended the College of Wooster from 1932-33. In 1936 he earned his bachelor of arts degree from the Ohio State University and received his doctor of medicine degree from OSU on 10 Jun 1940. He married Mildren Clara Senff on 11 Jun 1940 in Wooster, Wayne Co., OH.

Dr. Patterson, frequently referred to as "Doc" or "Pat" was much loved by his wife, family and the community. Dr. Patterson interned at Springfield City Hospital and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940, attaining the rank of Major before his discharge in 1946. He spent 16 mos. in India and Burma, as a flight surgeon. In recognition of outstanding service in air evacuation, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with three oak clusters and Pacific Theater ribbon with three combat stars.

In 1946, he began his practice of medicine in Millersburg, OH at 8 N. Clay St. His solo practice spanned a period of 45 years, during which he delivered more than 3,000 babies and made countless house calls. He was a true country doctor, traveling the county roads at all hours to attend to his patients.

During his medical career, Dr. Patterson was a member of the Board of directors of the Ohio Academy of Family Practitioners. He was a president of the medical staff at Pomerene Memorial Hospital, and a long time member and president of the Holmes Co. Health Board. He was a Member of the American Medical Assn., the Ohio State Academy of Family Practice and the Holmes County Medical Assn.

He served many terms as an elder of Millersburg Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1946, was a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite mason and a member of the Shrine. He was a 50-year member, president and a Phil Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.

As a member of the Millersburg Jaycees, he was a barbershop quartet singer, a charter member of the original Airport Authority Board, a member of the first Lake Buckhorn Governing Board, Holmes County Historical and Genealogical Societies, a life member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and was chosen as Grand Marshall of the Holmes County Antique Festival. He was an avid OSU Buckeye fan and a football season ticket holder for 65 years.

Dr. Patterson died 27 May 2006 at Walnut Hills Nursing Home, Walnut Creek, after an extended illness. Memorial Services were held at Millersburg United Presbyterian Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 66 years, Mildred; are children, Mary Beth (Jim) Shonk of FL and CT, Lee (John) Stuart of California, John (Judy) Patterson of Montana and Suzy (Mike) Kenyon of Mass.; grandchildren, Kristine Shonk Pfeifer, Jameson Shonk, Michael Stuart, Katherine Kenyon Henderson, Allison Kenyon, Christopher Kenyon, Timothy Patterson and Matthew Patterson; great grandchildren, Dylan and Ryan Pfeifer; a sister Della Ramseyer; and sister in law Louella Patterson.

Grandsons, Jeffry Shonk and Patrick Stuart, two brothers, three sisters, and his parents died previously.
