Pearl Painchaud Served as WAVE in World War II

Pearl (Allbee) Painchaud, 83, a longtime resident of Concord, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, surrounded by her family.

Pearl was the daughter of Margaret (Dalziel) and Hiel F. Allbee. She was born in Concord and raised on the Allbee farm in Bow. She attended Bow schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1942.

After high school, Pearl worked for the Farmer's Exchange and the state attorney general's office. She married Alston Couch of Bow, who died in Normandy, France, on June 7, 1944, while serving with 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. In 1945, Pearl enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE and was stationed in New York and Washington, D.C.

Upon her return to New Hampshire, she worked for the state liquor commission, and later, for the Department of Employment Security until her retirement.

Pearl was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Concord and a member of the Sew and Sew Knitting Club. She enjoyed reading, completing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, dining at the Cornerview Restaurant, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Pearl was predeceased by her husband, Richard 'Dick' Painchaud of Concord, with whom she shared 52 years of marriage; and her sister, Jane Lindquist of Bow.

She is survived by her six children and their spouses, all of Concord, Michael and Penny Painchaud, Gail Painchaud and Jeffrey Spoor, Steven and Maria Painchaud, Thomas and Bonnie Painchaud, Diane and Wayne Levesque, and Denise and Gregg Fournier. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Adam Painchaud and his wife, Christine; Annemarie and Brian Vaeni; Elena and Mark Painchaud; Abigail, Olivia and Zachary Painchaud; Craig, Julie and Donald Levesque; and Jillian Fournier. She also leaves a sister, Carol Gouin of Bow; and cousins, nieces, nephews and valued neighbors and friends.

The family is grateful for the affection and compassion of Pearl's companions and caregivers, including Jennifer Lombardo of Concord, the staff at the Birches at Concord and the staff at the N.H. Veterans Home of Tilton.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home in Concord.

Burial will be at Evans Cemetery in Bow at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Concord Youth Hockey, Dick Painchaud Scholarship, P.O. Box 682, Concord 03302; or to the Capitol Region Food Program c/o M. Susan Leahy, McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton, 11 S. Main St., Suite 500, Concord 03301.
