Son of William Albert & Loretta Kay Oliver Bacon
Brother of Laura Kay, Sara Elizabeth, Susan Margaret
Grandson of Albert Rodney Bacon & Laura Edith Dunn Bacon and John William Oliver & Willie Cornelia Lawson Oliver

Loren Michael was born on a Wednesday as a result of induced labor. His birth position was frank breech which unfortunately allowed the umbilical cord to be overly compressed by intense uterine contractions. This condition caused severe intrauterine anoxia resulting in a cardiac arrest at birth. He was susscessfully resusitated in the labor room by Dr. Deno Pappas and Dr. Doane Newton. His condition continued to deteriorate over the following days requiring cardiac resusitation on three more occassions. During this period he also required numerous blood transfusions. Because of his delicate condition it was necessary to draw blood directly from his father in 10cc increments and injected directly into Loren Michael via the umbilical vein. Bill Bacon was not allowed to eat for 24 hours during this period of time so that his blood sugar levels would remain constant thus minimizing the possibility of raising Loren's level too high. Loren's pediatrician, Dr. Rozensweig and his partner, Dr. Newton, consulted with Bill and Loretta and explained that Loren was displaying signs of severe brain damage and advised against the use of a respirator or repeating cardiac resusitation in the event of another cardiac arrest. Bill and Loretta visited the nursery for several hours and eventually came to the decision to follow the advice of the pediatricians. Loren Michael arrested in the early morning hours of September 21, 1974.

We are connected...my child and I...by an invisible cord...not seen by the eye...It's not like the cord that connects us 'till birth...this cord can't be seen by any on earth....This cord does its work...right from the start...It binds us together....attached to my heart...I know that it's there...though no one can see...the invisible cord from my child to me......The strength of this cord is hard to describe...It can't be destroyed...it can't be denied.....It's stronger than any cord man could create....It withstands the test...can hold any weight.....And though you are gone...though you are not here with me....This cord is still there...but no one can see......It pulls at my heart...I am bruised...I am sore....But this cord is my lifeline...as never before......I am thankful that God connects us this way....A mother and child....death can't take it away!
