German operatic soprano, born in Hannover. Wife of the famed conductor and composer Otto Klemperer (memorial 20990349), to whom she was married in 1919 in Cologne. They had two children: the actor Werner Klemperer (1920-2000, memorial 18850) and a daughter, Lotte (1923-2002).

November 3, 1956: Klemperer’s wife, Johanna, dies in a Munich hospital, having heard over the radio in her hospital bed her husband conduct for the last time, on 19 October, as he leads the Bayerische Rundfunk Orchester in Haydn’s ‘Clock’ Symphony and, poignantly, Mahler’s Symphony No 4, with its final movement for soprano, ‘Wir geniessen die himmlischen Freuden’. Otto Klemperer chose two pieces by Bach, “Bist Du bei mir” and Wenn ich einmal muss scheiden”, to be played at Johanna's funeral in Munich. (From: Otto Klemperer archive guide, Library of Congress.)

After Johanna's death, their daughter Lotte Klemperer took charge of her father’s personal cares and assumed full responsibility for all his professional matters, including conducting engagements, recording contracts, fees, etc.
