Nina Jane Davis Burke, 81, life-long resident of New Castle, IN, passed away Sunday morning at Henry County Hospital in New Castle. She was born Aug. 4, 1918 in New Castle, IN, a daughter of the late Fred P. and Carrie Byrd Davis.

She was a 1936 graduate of New Castle High School, attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO, and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She and her husband owned and operated The Ice House tavern, and the former Tank and Seafood Buffet in New Castle, IN for many years. She was very involved with her family activities, and was very active in many social and civic activities. She had a God given gift of hospitality, and loved to plan special events, and entertain family and friends. She enjoyed planning and organizing her senior class activities, and loved the fellowship she had with the class of 1936. She also enjoyed art, horses, and horseback riding. As a young lady, she took art lessons and English horseback riding and jumping classes. Her membership and activities included: Tri Kappa Sorority, First Presbyterian Church, Lady Elks Auxiliary, The Woman's Club, Columbia Club of Indianapolis, Several Bridge Clubs, and the Henry County Art Association. She cherished the time she spent with her loved ones on the family farm south of New Castle.

She is survived by two sons, Alex Burke (wife-Robin) of New Castle, and Fred Burke of New Castle; one daughter-in-law, Jill Burke of Greenfield, IN; five grandsons; one step-granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; four step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Gloria Jennings of New Castle; one sister-in-law, Cappy Merrill of New Castle; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred P. and Carrie Byrd Davis; husband, Harry A. Burke, whom she married Aug. 4, 1941, and he passed away in 1995; one son, Tom Burke in 2001; one great-grandson, A.J. Burke in 2008; two brothers-in-law, Marvin "Marty" Merrill and Richard "Dick" Jennings; and one sister-in-law, Mary Seiler.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Macer-Hall Funeral Home in New Castle. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Arthur Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County or American Cancer Society or Henry County Community Foundation C/O The Harry A. Burke and family unrestricted fund or St. Anne Catholic Church Building Fund.
