Larry Gail Sawyer passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 13, 2015, in Grand Ronde, Oregon. He was at Spirit Mountain Casino where he loved to get away and play poker.

Larry was born April 7, 1939, to Robert and Mable Cole Sawyer in Oakridge, Oregon. He was the younger of two sons. He attended school in White Fir, Oregon.

At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years as a 3rd class engineer. He married Lucy Sawyer in 1957 and had three children.

For a time, he worked for his brother and briefly sold shoes. Then, he worked for Roseburg Forest Industry as a stock rustler before becoming a superintendent for the dryers. He started painting and established L & L Sawyer Painting & Sandblasting, later renamed Sawyer Painting & Sandblasting, in the late 1960s. He employed up to 30 employees and ran a very successful company. He was very hardworking and dedicated. He was well known in the community and served the construction business well for more than 45 years.

He married Rani Sawyer in 1995.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his two sons Joey Sawyer and David Sawyer.

He is survived by his wife Rani Sawyer; daughter Veronica Gillespie and son-in-law Tom Gillespie; his brother Robert Sawyer; three grandchildren Sean Sawyer, Jonathan Gillespie, and Jenna Gillespie; and one great-grandson, Ryder Sawyer, all whom live in Roseburg. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Larry will be greatly missed by all his friends and loved ones. His charismatic personality and tenacious attitude will not be forgotten.

A small veteran’s memorial will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2015, at the VA pavilion. There will be a Celebration of life service to honor Larry at the Roseburg fairgrounds Sunday, July 12, 2015, at 4 p.m., dinner and reception to follow. Join us to say farewell.
