Lester (John) F. Jenkins, of 137 Rose Street, Lexington, KY; formerly of North Beaver Township, passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in the VA Medical Center, Lexington, KY at the age of 93.

He was the 6th child of John S. Jenkins and Mary Etta Onstott. He was born on Thorpe Street, New Castle on March 18, 1918. Mr. Jenkins was married to the former Bette Waddington who preceded him in death April 21, 1992.

Lester graduated from New Castle High School in 1937. He was a United States Army, World War II Veteran serving for four and half years on the European Front. Last December he received the French Legion Medal of Honor for playing a key part in the liberation of Paris. This is the highest honor given to an individual by the French.

After the war he spent most of his time in horticulture, working for Welkers Greenhouse in sales and marketing. Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Mt. Jackson Presbyterian Church and also the 190th Field Artillery Group Association of WWII. His favorite hobbies were fishing and woodworking.

He leaves behind two children, a daughter, Janet Tucker of Lexington, KY and a son, Tim Jenkins and wife Laure of Versailles, KY and four grandchildren, Shawn, Allison and Michelle Jenkins and Edwin (Billy) Tucker.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Raymond, Andy and Wilbur Jenkins and a sister, Lorene.
