He was an alumnus of Allen University. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity, Inc. Omega Service. He was also a member of the Masonic Capital Chapter #47 Ritual. He was a veteran of Vietnam and the receipent of a Purple Heart. After military service he attended the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, graduating in 1988 with a Master of Divinity. He was assigned to Friendship AME and Olive Branch AME in Mount Pleasant and St. Luke’s AME in Hollywood. He was a retired pastor of Greater Zion AME Church in the nearby town of Awendaw. He was a member of Mother Emanuel AME Church's ministeral staff in Charleston, SC. He attended bible study every Wednesday at the church.

He was shot during the mass shooting at Bible Study session at Mother Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. It happened during a prayer meeting being held at the church on Wednesday night, June 17, 2015 approximately 9 PM. He was taken to MUSC; however, he died at the hospital.

At 2 PM on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 a Celebration of Life in the memory of Reverend Daniel Lee Simmons, Sr. was held at Greater St. Luke A.M.E. Church, 78 Gordon Street, Charleston, SC. The Reverend Dr. Herbert Temoney officiated. A viewing started at 1 PM before the service.

A wake was held in his honor from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Leevy’s Funeral Home, Taylor Street Chapel, 1831 Taylor St., Columbia, SC. A funeral service began at 10 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 819 Woodrow St., Columbia. The Rev. Ronnie Brailsford officiated.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 11 AM Bethel A.M.E. Church, 819 Woodrow Street, Columbia, SC. The Reverend Dr. Ronnie Brailsford officiated. A viewing started at 10 AM before the service.
