Martje Snip was born in April 1821 in the country village of Lettelbert in the southwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of the 23 years aged laborer Willem Jacobs Snip and Wilhelmina Heemstra, 31 years old.

On 7 April 1842 the 20 years aged servant maid Martje Willems Snip, daughter of day-laborers Willem Jacobs Snip and Wilhelmina Heemstra, married in the country village of Grootegast in the western part of province Groningen the 10 years older farmer Hemke Hotses Scheerenga, son of farmer Hotse Tonnis Scheerenga and late Jenke Karsens.

They had in Sebaldeburen, the following 12 children:
* Hotse, 16 July 1842-1906;
* Wilhelmina, 21 February 1844-1923;
* Willem, 28 March 1846-1883;
* Tonnis, 3 February 1848-1925;
* Karst, 29 June 1849-1849;
* Karst, 9 June 1850-1919;
* Jenke, 3 June 1852-1908;
* Antje, 2 April 1854-1912;
* Jakob, 16 February 1856-1941, USA, Indiana, Lake County;
* Jantje, 6 March 1858-1940;
* Geertje, 24 September 1860-1940;
* Reina, 25 March 1863-1947.

Jacob Scheeringa was her only child which emigrated to the USA. Her husband Hemke Hotses Scheeringa was in all those years a farmer in Sebaldeburen.

Her husband Hemke Hotzes Scheeringa died in December 1890 at the age of 79 years in his birthplace Sebaldeburen. Martje died there too in April 1909, at the age of almost 88 years.
