Oliver Norman Alkire, 92, of Lafayette, passed away at I.U. Arnett Hospital of Tuesday, June 16.

Born April 5, 1923, he was the son of the late Oliver Alkire and Josephine Crister Alkire. Norman graduated from Clarks Hill High School in 1941 where he played basketball and served as captain of the basketball team.

Norman married Ruth Anna Hufford on November 11, 1951. She preceded him in death in 1998. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where he had served as deacon. He also was a Master Gardener from the Purdue Extension Program and was always an agriculturalist at heart. He also served as a Red Coat Volunteer for many years at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He enjoyed participating in the local Soap Box Derby program with his sons, achieving second place one year. He also was a leader in the Indian Guides program.

He grew up in Round Grove, Indiana (White County) where he farmed with his father and brothers before moving to Clarks Hill. He then worked at National Homes in Lafayette for eighteen years. Always looking for educational opportunities, he took a correspondence course in TV repair and worked for Sears as a TV repair serviceman, retiring from there in 1986. Norman continued to be an avid believer in exercise, rarely missing a day of 'working out' at the Newtone Fitness Center.

Surviving are his sons, Douglas (Adaline) of Indianapolis, Dennis (Connie) of Bradenton, Florida, and Daniel of Decatur, Illinois; grandchildren, Micah, Patrick, Kathryn, Brittany, Bryce, and great-grandson Lajon. Also surviving is his special friend, Patsy Niswonger. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Truman and Charles, and half brothers Dave and Pete Anderson.

Funeral service will be held at 10 am Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Bethany Presbyterian Church (3305 Longlois Drive, Lafayette, IN) with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Kevin Bowers officiating. Burial to follow in Pyrmont Cemetery. -
