NEWKIRK — Longtime Newkirk resident, Milly Belle Kelley, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. She was born the daughter of Byron and Belle Neal in Crescent, Okla. on Jan. 31, 1936.

Milly graduated from Red Rock High School in 1954 and attended Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College from 1954-57. Hers was the first class to graduate in August 1957 from the newly named Oklahoma State University and she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics.

She was married to Don R. Deason and they were the parents of four daughters, Lesa Belle Crowe (Norman), of Choctaw; Tracy Lynn Shepard Yenor, of Kansas City, Kan.; Tina Marie Mantz (Bryan) and Patricia Kelly Goad (Brady), both of Newkirk.

She had eight wonderfully spoiled rotten and much-loved grandchildren, who flourished and grew strong because of the love, support and friendship of their devoted grandmother. She also had six great-grandchildren. There were so many other kids that came into her life through her girls and their kids and all benefited from her kindness and generosity.

Milly began her employment as a social worker for the Department of Human Services in 1967 and was retired at age 56 in 1991. She was well-known throughout the state, and especially by the citizens of Kay County, as a tough, caring and fair advocate for those in need. She particularly respected and enjoyed working with the many law enforcement officers, citizens, county and state workers she had the privilege to associate with during her tenure.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one grandson, Dustin Kyle Shepard.

In order to honor their mother’s wishes, the family will not be offering a public funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a memorial fund in her name to the Newkirk Meals on Wheels program. She was deeply touched by all the volunteers that served her lunch each day and she mentioned this often to her family.

If you would like to donate, please send your contribution to any Eastman National Bank branch in honor of Milly Kelley.

Her family would like to express their gratitude to all the wonderful friends and hospice workers for their love and support during this difficult time. You have blessed Mom and all of us with your kind wishes, prayers and thoughts.
