Clyde Leroy Merritt grew up on the Merritt farm, helped his father farm, but never married. He farmed a brief period in South Dakota with his sister, Myrtle. During that period he owned a steam powered tractor and a threshing machine doing custom work for South Dakota farmers. After some crop failures in the 1920's and the depression, Clyde returned to the Merritt farm and worked for his brother, Howard. He lived with the family up until his brother Howard's death in 1962.
