At the age of four years he moved with his parents to a farm north of Andrew where he grew to manhood.
On October 15, 1873 he was united in marriage to Wilmina J. Shoaff, who with five sons and four daughters are left to morn his loss: Joseph, Minnie, and Clyde Merritt and Mrs. Edith Miller of Clinton, Calvin Merritt of Lyons, Lester of Davenport, Lillian Hankemeir of Andrew and Myrtle and Howard at home also four grandchildren and two brothers.
