Calvin Troy Goforth was born in a small farm house near the Cimarron River close to Perkins on Jan. 7, 1926, to Lucille Goforth and Robert L. Hert, Sr. Cal was delivered into this world by Dr. R.W. Holbrook and was raised in Perkins primarily by his great grandmother Martha Hert and her son E. R. “Rassie” Hert. Cal was the senior class president when he graduated from Perkins High School and joined the Navy in 1943.
While in the Navy, Cal became an officer and flew the F6F Hellcat onto a number of aircraft carriers, including the USS Midway and USS Boxer. He served in the Pacific and Atlantic fleets until his honorable discharge in the early 1950s when he pursued a civilian career as a lawyer.
Cal’s career as a Naval aviator took him on tours of duty throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida. Ultimately, Cal was stationed at the Alameda Naval Air Station in California, where he came to love the Golden State which became his permanent home.
In 1948, Cal married the love of his life Maria Poveda Luciano Goforth, and they had three children, Michael, Ann and Kelly.
Calvin graduated from Stanford University law school in 1956 and enjoyed a successful career as a litigation attorney in Oakland, Calif. Cal served as president of the Alameda County Bar Association, and the Rotary Club of Oakland. He enjoyed the practice of law until his retirement in 2010.
Over the years, Cal often spoke fondly of his family and friends in Perkins. He particularly loved his Oklahoma childhood memories, which included fishing for catfish, riding his black pony “Cricket” and assisting his grandfather Rassie Hert in his farming and polo pony raising endeavors.
Cal passed away peacefully March 28. He is survived, and lovingly missed, by his wife of 65 years, Maria, his two children, Michael and Ann Goforth, and their respective spouses, Heather Goforth and James Henderson. Cal is also survived by his two grandsons, Todd Goforth and Tyler Goforth. Cal was preceded in death by his loving son Kelly Goforth.
