The death of Mrs. Chester, formerly the wife of the late Gove. Harvey, bring to mind the time when Wisconsin could not boast of an executive mansion and when the governor and his wife both boarded whenever they could. When Mr. Harvey become governor in January, 1862l he and his wife boarded with Mr. Nat. Dean in a large brick house which stood where the Park hotel now stands. Gov. Harvey had already been states senator and secretary of state, and both he and his wife were well known and liked by Madison people, Judge Lyon, Judge Cole, Gen. Fairchild, Gen. Atwood, Judge Keyes, G.B. Smith and Judge Hopkins being among their most intimate friends. Gen. Fairchild in speaking of her today said, “Mrs. Chester was a woman of strong character and great ability. Active and brainy she was of great el to her husband during his three months as governor, and well able to take up the work among the soldiers he left unfinished at his death. Her work among the hospitals of the army of the west is long to be remembered and many a poor fellow owes his life to her. It was through her that northern hospitals were established and this great work will remain a monument to her memory.”
