John D. (J.D.) Hext Sr., 61, died Saturday, June 18, 1977, at 1:20 a.m. in Hill Country Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack.
His body lay in state in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home until 9:45, Monday, June 20, and a funeral mass followed at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anthony Cummins officiating. Burial followed in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
The rosary was recited Sunday, June 19, at 7 p.m., in Schatter Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Hext was born in Mason County on Aug. 12, 1915, the son of Andrew Hext and Delia Wooton Hext. He married Doris Pyka in St. Mary's Catholic Church on June 7, 1939, and she survives.
He became a driver for Sunset Motor Lines (which later became East Texas Motor Freight) in 1940. He retired from this company on March 11, 1976, after 36 years of service. During his years of driving, Mr. Hext received several safe driving awards, including the Million Mile Club Award.
After his retirement he enjoyed working on his ranch in the Spring Creek area.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Carole Ann, Mrs. Reuben Bohnert, Fredericksburg; three sons, John D. Hext Jr., Fredericksburg; Ricky A. Hext, Austin; and Robert A. Hext, Fredericksburg; two grandchildren; his mother Mrs. Andrew Hext of Christoval; a brother and a sister, Granviel Hext, Eldorado; and Lucille, Mrs. Guy Edwards, Odessa.
His father preceded him in death.
Pallbearers were Larry Pyka, Gary Pyka, Herman Walker, Preston Pyka, Herbert Pyka, Bruce Pyka, M. D. Hext and David Pyka.
Mrs. C. L. Weinheimer was the organist and the St. Mary's Adult Choir sang for the services.
