"Ned" Sherman Jr., became co-publishers in 1948, with Albert handling the business end and Ned involved in the news operation. They guided the newspaper from the era of molten lead and manual typewriters to the modern age of computers. Edward Sherman retired in 1975.Albert Sherman retired in 1980 then split time between Rhode Island and Naples, Fla., but remained as chairman of The Daily News board of directors. "Al was a very kind man," longtime friend Richard Sheffield told the Daily News. "He was soft-spoken, never one out front to lead the charge. He quietly did the right thing. "Sherman also was active in civic organizations, serving as the first treasurer of the Preservation Society of Newport County. He also served as a longtime board member of both Newport Hospital and the Newport Electric Corp. He was a former president of the New England Daily Newspaper Association. David P. Leys, whose family owned the former Leys Century store in downtown Newport, said Sherman and the newspaper backed downtown redevelopment in the late 1960s and into the 1970s."He realized that downtown was dying for retail and he supported redevelopment, which was controversial at the time," Leys said. Sherman, a native of Newport, graduated from Amherst College in 1940, then served as a Naval officer in World War II. During a leave, he visited a college friend in Pittsburgh, where he met his wife, Frances Johnson Sherman. They were married for 63 years. In addition to his wife, brother and oldest son, Sherman is survived by his daughter, Katharine Sherman Zins of Wellesley, Mass.; son Bruce Sherman of Seattle, and eight grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday at Trinity Church in Newport."
