SUNBURY — Charles H. Maurer, 94, of 448 N. 5th Street passed away at Sunbury Health and Rehabilitation Sunbury, on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
He was born to the late Lloyd and Mary (Bennage) Maurer on July 26, 1920, in Lewisburg, Union County, PA.
Charles graduated from Selinsgrove High School in 1939.
On Jan. 28, 1942, he married Arlene N. Kratzer, who survives; his death ends 73 years of marriage.
Charles served as a U.S. Army medic for three years during World War II. He drove ambulance servicing bombers returning from European bombing missions to England’s airfields.
He was employed by Weis Markets in 1946, working in their frozen foods warehouse for 36 years until his retirement in 1982.
He loved whitetail deer hunting and camping in Potter County “God’s Country.”
He was a life member of Americus Hose Company and Kreamer Sportsmen’s Club; a member of American Legion Post #201 and Grace Lutheran Church Sunbury. He also volunteered for the Sunbury Fire Police.
Surviving are his son Roger A. and Jane P. Maurer, of Sunbury; two grandsons, Scott A. Maurer, of Berwick, and Adam L. and Kate Maurer, of Sunbury; two grandchildren, Blake B. Maurer and Chase Maurer; and great-granddaughter, Kenzie Maurer; with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Martha, Helen, Grace, Betty and Arla.
Visitation will be from 10 to 10:55 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastors Elinor Allison and Christopher Brown co-officiating.
Burial will follow in the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
Memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 126 Spruce St., Sunbury, PA 17801.
