Mr. Hassenfeld, who was born in Providence R.I., on Jan. 13, 1916, served as the president and chairman of the board of Hassenfeld Brothers Inc., now known as Hasbro Industries, after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was the oldest son of the late Henry and Marion Hassenfeld. He attended Hope High School in Providence and graduated from Brown University in 1937.
In 1946, in a move to expand the interests of the family business, Mr. Hassenfeld moved to Nashville to head up the Empire Pencil Co. He continued as CEO of Empire/Berol Corp. until his retirement in 1988.
Mr. Hassenfeld developed the Epcon process of manufacturing wood-like pencils using resins in place of natural cedar wood. The process revolutionized the writing industry and contributed greatly to the regeneration and preservation of cedar trees.
Mr. Hassenfeld served on the board of directors of Temple Emanu-El, West End Synagogue in Nashville and the American Cancer Society. He also was a fellow at Brandeis University.
Both Mr. Hassenfeld and his wife, Rita Dee, have been honored by the American Jewish Theological Seminary.
He also was a member of the Paul Harris Fellow Society of Rotary, Masons, Kiwanis and Shriners.
Mr. Hassenfeld is survived by his wife, Rita Dee (Greenberg) Hassenfeld; his children, Pamela and Anthony Iannacio of Tampa; Elisabeth and Stanley Litchman of Farmington, Mass.; and John and Heidi Hassenfeld of Nashville; and four grandchildren, Patricia and Ethan Hassenfeld and Alexander and Addison Iannacio.
