This family was in the same location in 1860. George Sampson was born in or about 1792 in Maryland and his wife, Rachel, was born in or about 1799, also in Maryland.
William B. Sampson, of Fulton County, Illinois enlisted in August of 1861 in Co. C, 47th Illinois Infantry. He enlisted on the same day in the same regiment as his brother, John T. Sampson. William mustered out in October of 1864. A Civil War widow's pension for Mary J. Sampson was filed April 5,1890, from Kansas. An enrollment form for Kansas veterans lists his death date as April 11, 1889. However, it also lists his death location as "Lyman Co., Kansas." There has never been a Lyman County in Kansas, so perhaps this was meant to be Linn County. There is a Lyon County in Kansas and Miami County was formerly named Lykins County. The grave of William B. Sampson has not been found and there are a number of lost graves in eastern Kansas.
William's mother, Rachel, died before the 1870 census. Information from Ancestry.com lists her maiden name as Hammond. Family members were in Bates County, Missouri in 1870. William Sampson married Mary J. Compton in April of 1867 in Bates County. (Missouri marriage record)
William & Mary were in Deer Creek, Bates, MIssouri in 1870 with Frank, age 2, and Ida, age 1. George Sampson, listed as age 71, born in Maryland, was living with them.
In 1880 William, listed as age 49 OH, and Mary J., 40 IN, were in Potosi, Linn, Kansas with Frank, 13, MO; Dale, 9, MO; Maude, 7, MO; Clara, 4, MO; & Charlie, 4 months, KS. This family was in the same location in the 1885 Kansas state census, with the addition of Minnie, age 2. This census also records the Civil War military service of William B. Sampson in Co. C, 47th Illinois Infantry. Records from the Jewell GAR Post # 3 at Pleasanton, (Linn County) Kansas, also record him as a farmer in Linn County who served for 3 years, 2 months, and 25 days in Co. C, 47th Illinois Infantry. He enlised as a Private and mustered out as a Sergeant.
