He is preceded in death by his parents George L. Butts Sr. and Mary C. Butts.
George is survived by his wife, Sandra Finch Butts, one son, Robert Gerald Butts of New Bern, two daughters; Ginny B. McKinney and husband Jackie of New Bern, and Heather L. O'Connor and husband David of New Bern, two brothers; Lester Butts and wife Joyce of New Bern, and William "Bill" Butts and wife Betty of New Bern, one sister, Bonnie Minks and husband Peter of Morehead City, five grandchildren; Amber McKinney and Jeremy, Corey McKinney and wife Holly, Austin Butts, Sarah O'Connor, and Erin Rose O'Connor, and two great grandchildren; Cooper and Brinnin Bloomberg.
As a young man, George alongside his brother owned and operated Williams Texaco and Oil Company for 23 ½ years. George went on to build Thurman Service Center, an automotive shop that he operated for 14 years. After semi-retiring he operated George's Landscaping. Drag racing was also a passion of George's; he owned a '74 Plymouth Duster in which he won quite a few races with. George was a member of Riverdale United Methodist Church, where he was extremely close to his church family. Also a member of Rockwell Farm Hunting Club, George had a great love for hunting and riding the "back roads" in the Croatan Forest. George also enjoyed fishing, growing a garden and sharing the vegetables with all his neighbors. He enjoyed watching his great grandchildren's baseball games and practices and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren and family.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Cotton Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Monday, June 15, 2015 at Cotten Funeral Home.
