Ernest Joseph (E. J.) Hierholzer went to be with the Lord of Saturday, June 13th, 2015 , after several months residency at the Floresville Residence & Rehabilitation Center. He died peacefully at age 91 years, 5 months, and 27 days.
E. J. was born December 17, 1923 to Otto J. Hierholzer and Nettie Pearl Blumberg on his grandparent’s, Joseph W. and Elisa Schaefer’s 200 acre farm at New Braunfels Avenue and Eisenhauer Road in San Antonio, Texas.
When E. J. was one, his parents purchased a farm in Wilson County near the Black Hill community West of Floresville, where he grew up and farmed with his father. He attended Borrego, later named Hierholzer school located in the nearby community. He graduated from Floresville High School and attended the University of Texas before returning to operate the family farm with his father.
During the severe drought of the 1950s, he began working with the USDA’s Wilson County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service while continuing to farm. In 1979 he entered management training with the ASC and upon completion managed offices in Crockett, Sutton, Zavala, and finally Wilson County, from which he retired in 1987.
The family historian, E. J. did extensive research and recording of family ancestry. During his research he made numerous trips to Germany, visiting the birthplaces of ancestors, meeting many extended family and making lifelong friends.
E. J. was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Gwendolyn Butler Hierholzer, and sister Rosalie and husband T. L. “Les” Bourland.
He is survived by his brother, Otto Jr. and wife Jo Carolyn of Floresville, nephews Hugh Hierholzer and wife Kimberly of Floresville, Chris Hierholzer of Floresville, and Kirk Hierholzer and wife Aubrey of Lompoc, California. Nephew Terry Bourland of Shertz, Niece Linda Bourland Keen and husband Billy of Shertz and numerous great nieces and nephews.
