John Blake Snyder was born on February 13, 1907 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The oldest surviving child of Timothy Grant Snyder, who served aboard Admiral Dewey's flagship during the Spanish American War, he was the grandson of Civil War veteran, Timothy Matthias Snyder.

John's grandfather, who was born in Ashland, served with the 47th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, which saw action in Washington, DC; Beaufort, South Carolina; Key West, Florida; Louisiana; and as part of Sheridan's 1864 Shenandoah campaign.

John's mother was Alice (Blake) Snyder. He was baptized at First Presbyterian in Reading on the 18th of June. His older sister, Lillie May, died before reaching two years of age - a little over a week before John was born.

John's other siblings were William Alfred Snyder, Sr., who preceded him in death by just one month in 1990; Mary Naomi (Snyder) Kelly, who passed away in 1971; Catharine M. (Snyder) Williams, who passed away in 1973; and Harry Allen Snyder, Sr., who passed away in 1983.

After serving his country as a Radarman, 3rd class for the U.S. Navy during World War II from 28 January 1944 to 28 January 1946, he was Honorably Discharged at Bainbridge, Maryland, and returned home to Allentown, where he worked as a tailor at the former Phoenix Clothes until his retirement.

John Blake Snyder passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown on October 22, 1990. He was interred at St. Mark's Cemetery in Allentown on 25 October 1990. The Kulik Funeral Home handled his funeral arrangements. The surviving family member listed on his Pennsylvania Veteran's Burial Index Card was his niece, Shirley Snyder, of Slatington, Pennsylvania.
