1900 Census shows he immigrated from Germany in 1882 (21 yrs old) he came to New York port. His oldest child, Edward, was certain that his father had entered the country on a passport in another name. The story that Edward knew: John had a brother that had deserted the German Army and applied for a passport. The brother died, so John used the passport.
In 1900 John supported a wife, 8 children, his mother-in-law (Minnie M aged 70) and his brother-in-law (Herman C aged 30) on a farm in Grayson County, Texas.
His last child was born November 1, 1901. He was 40 years old.
March 3, 1903 he was arrested for "Removing mortgaged property". He purchased cattle, 2 head, in Texas and was taking them home in Oklahoma. As soon as he crossed the Red River (the border), he was arrested. The trial was in Grayson, Texas on April 19, 1903. He was found guilty and received "2+2 years". He served his term in Huntsville Federal Prison, Texas. John was to be released on March 3, 1907, but was pardoned September 6, 1905.
The Family Bible says: "Mr Mahnke came home the 7 September and died the December 10 and buried the 11 at Seward, OK". He died of tuberculosis.
