Ernest William Karisch passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, June 10, 2015, at the age of 75 due to a heart attack. He was born at home at his family's rural farm between Smithville and Winchester, Texas, to William Paul and Clara Rose (Meuth) Karisch on December 17, 1939.

Ernest was Baptized as an infant at St. Mary Catholic Church in Pin Oak, Texas, where he also received his First Holy Communion and was Confirmed. He was active in this rural parish as an altar server into his young adulthood.

Ernest attended 1st grade in Winchester, Texas, and then attended Smithville schools until his graduation from Smithville High School in 1958.

After working a short time for the Texas State Highway Department and at local livestock auctions after his graduation, Ernest was hired by MKT (Missouri-Kansas-Texas) Railroad in 1960, during which time he became well known by the nickname "Shanghai". He continued his employment with the railroad and retired from Union Pacific in 2000.

Ernest met Katherine Theresa Pesl at a high school football game in the fall of 1959. The young couple was married at St. Paul Catholic Church, Smithville, on June 23, 1962. Ernest was a parishoner at St. Paul for nearly 50 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4868, and a Lifetime Member of the Smithville Jamboree.

Ernest enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially deer, squirrel, and coon hunting. One of his greatest pleasures was fishing in the Colorado River and Lake Somerville, and he absolutely loved gardening for which he had a special ability to grow almost anything...and a lot of it. Another of Ernest's life's passions was listening to classic Country & Western music. It was easy to recognize when Ernest was in the neighborhood as he could be heard coming from blocks away as these songs blared from his open truck window.

Pa-Pa Karisch was his grandchildren's greatest fan at their many sporting events, including football and baseball games, and youth rodeos. He will be missed deeply by all of his family and friends.

Ernest is preceded in death by his mother (June 5, 1963) and father (November 28, 1986); infant sister, Marie Karisch; infant son, William Paul Karisch; brothers-in-law, Wayne Fulmer and Woody Burns, Jr.; nephew, Steve Burns; and son-in-law, Trey Courtemanche.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 53 years, Katherine (Pesl) Karisch; children, Cecilia (Karisch) Quick of Austin; Ernest W. Karisch, Jr. and wife, Brenda (Frerich), Kathie Gail (Karisch) Courtemanche, and Kimberly (Karisch) Dawson and husband, Steve, all of rural Smithville; grandchildren, Samantha Quick of San Antonio; Ethan Karisch, Dalton and Jake Dawson, and Cade and Claire Courtemanche, all of rural Smithville; sisters, Virginia (Karisch) Fulmer and Delores (Karisch) Burns; niece, Dinah (Fulmer) Breeden and husband, Chuck, and nephews, Jeff Burns and wife, Karla, and Cliff Burns, and wife, Marilyn, all of Smithville.

Visitation will be at All Faiths of the Pines Funeral Home, Smithville with the recitation of the Rosary by Deacon Bernard Meuth and the Knights of Columbus. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Pius T. Mathew at St. Paul Catholic Church, Smithville. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Smithville.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ethan Karisch, Dalton and Jake Dawson, and Cade Courtemanche; and nephews, Jeff Burns and Cliff Burns.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to All Faiths of the Pines.
