Born Nov. 5, 1948 in South Charleston, W.Va., to Anna Marie and Cahill Foley, she was raised and married the late William Paul Harper in Parkersburg. Graduated from PHS in 1966 and worked for United Bank, until 1972. Then she and her husband moved to Huntington, W.Va, then to North Carolina to finish his law degree. They settled in North Carolina and raised two sons. She found time to complete an undergraduate degree at Meredith College and went on to a long and successful career at North Carolina State University, which she retired from in 2014.
Her passions included doting on her three grandchildren, family vacations in Canada, baking treats for family and friends and of course anything having to do with the Wolfpack. She was very active in awareness and fund raising aimed at finding a cure for breast cancer, providing the time, energy and love to other survivors of the disease, having survived and thrived for 21 years after her initial diagnosis and treatment in 1994.
Survivors include her two sons, Geoffrey Harper (Veronica) of Chesterfield, Va. and Michael Harper (Megan) of Sunnyside, N.Y.; three grandchildren, William, Victoria and Henry: her sister, Rebecca Soeder of Houston, Texas; and her brother, Joseph Foley of Parkersburg.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 13, 2015, at the LDS Church, 5060 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of breast cancer research.
