Walton, Silas S. Section G, Block 53, Lot 9

Silas S. Walton was born on August 11, 1824, in Broome County, New York. He enlisted on January 25, 1864, at Eagle, Michigan at the age of 39 for a three year term of service. He served as a Private in Battery E of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery. On August 11, 1864 he was transferred to Battery M of the same regiment. In the many engagements this regiment was a part of, one of the most notable was the battle of Nashville, Tennessee, in December of 1864. Silas was discharged on August 1, 1865, in Jackson, Michigan. Silas married Sarah Gertrude Hoyt in 1853 in Watertown Township, Michigan. They came to Northern Michigan in 1877 and farmed a 160 acre homestead in Charlevoix County. Silas passed away on April 5, 1884, at the age of 59
