Sara Ellen Phillips, 59, of Upper Macungie Township, Pa., died peacefully at home on June 2, 2015, after a long illness.

She was the daughter of Harold Mark Cohen and Mary Merritt Simms Cohen, and the granddaughter of Benedict Francis Simms and Mary Elizabeth Merritt Simms of Springfield, the owners of Beechland Farm in Washington County.

She is survived by her partner, Rob Hays; her sister Elizabeth Merritt Williams, of Montgomery, Ala.; her brother Benedict Francis Simms Cohen, of Washington, D.C.; her niece Katherine Rebecca Shores and grand-nephew Vincent Asher Shores, of Seattle, Wash., and her nephew Paul Mark Cohen and niece Mary Susannah Cohen, of Washington, D.C.

She graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee with a bachelor's degree in French and received masters degrees in creative writing and horticulture from the University of Indiana at Bloomington and the University of Kentucky at Lexington, respectively.

For many years she was a book and magazine editor and writer, specializing in gardening and horticulture. She was the former executive editor of Rodale Press garden books, executive editor at Fair Winds Press in Gloucester, Mass., and senior editor of Organic Gardening magazine. Among the many books she wrote was the well-regarded Illustrated Encyclopedia of Perennials, which she co-authored with C. Colston Burrell. She was a lifelong gardener, naturalist and environmentalist, poet and student of Simms family history; she also raised a wide variety of heritage chickens. In recent years she was also an avid blogger, and her blogs "Red Dog Reiki" and "Poor Richards Almanac: A Luddite's take on life, chickens, and other critical issues" both won awards.

A mass of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2015, at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Culpepper Elliott officiating. She was buried with her grandparents and mother in St. Dominic-Holy Rosary Cemetery.
