Dorothy Ann Thieman was
born August 14, 1924 in Albert
City, the daughter of Warren
and Anna (Blohm) Thieman.
She was raised in the Albert
City area and received her education
in Albert City schools,
graduating from Albert City
High School. She was baptized,
confirmed, married and a lifetime
member of St. John
Lutheran Church in rural
Albert City. Dorothy Ann wanted
to be a nurse, so she
enrolled in the registered nursing
training at Iowa Lutheran
Hospital in Des Moines following
high school. She graduated
with her R.N. degree in 1945,
and was employed by Lutheran
Hospital in Fort Dodge from
1945-1951. On March 15, 1951,
Dorothy Ann began working at
Buena Vista County Hospital,
which was the same day the
hospital opened for business.
On October 24, 1952,
Dorothy Ann was united in
marriage to Ralph (Jack) Darrow
at SL John Lutheran
Church in rural Albert City.
Their marriage was blessed
with two sons: Scott, born February
20, 1955 and Kirk, born
March 31, 1958. Her children
and grandchildren were all
baptized and confirmed at St.
John Lutheran Church, rural
Albert City. Dorothy Ann and
Jack lived in Storm Lake until
1956, when they moved to the
family farm in rural Albert City.
In addition to making a warm
and comfortable home for her
family, Dorothy Ann continued
her career as a nurse at Buena
Vista County Hospital, where
she was employed until her
retirement in 1972.
Dorothy Ann also served on
the hospital board a number of
years.
Dorothy Ann and Jack
moved to Marathon in 1982,
then to Star Lake in Minnesota
in 1984. They moved back to
Albert City in 1993.
Left to cherish her memory
are her husband of more than
52 years, Jack Darrow of Albert
City; sons Scott and wife Lori
Darrow of Newell and Kirk Darrow
of Circle Pines, Minn.;
grandchildren Morgan and
Spencer Darrow of Newell; a
sister, Mary Lou and husband
Paul Wenger of St Petersburg,
Fla.; other family members and
many friends.
Dorothy Ann was preceded
in death by her parents, Warren
and Anna Thieman, and a
brother, William Thieman.
