The "Black Pearl" was one of the first African-American celebrities of boxing. He won the Colored Middleweight Championship of the World by beating Black Frank in 1887, followed by winning the Northwest Middleweight Championship by beating Dick Moore in 1890. For years he was considered unbeatable. Member of inaugural class of 2010 of the Minnesota Boxing Hall of Fame, with a known record of 54-12-15 with 40 KO's.
