Clarence David Ammons, 94, of Bristol, passed away suddenly Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Satilla Regional Medical Center in Waycross.

A native of Wayne County, he had moved from Odum to Bristol six years ago. He retired from the railroad but had also served as a sheriff's deputy in Pierce County in the late 1940s and as a county warden at the Pierce County Prison Camp. He was inducted into the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame for his boxing abilities. He had boxed under the name of "Kid Georgia Boy" in the late 30s and early 40s. In recent years, he had owned and operated a lawn care service. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the son of the late Asa and Annie Victoria Reddish Ammons and was also preceded in death by six sisters and seven brothers. He was a member of Ephesus Church of God near Bristol.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Thornton Ammons, Bristol; six daughters, Maxine King, Mary Ann (Benny) Guest, all of Offerman, Margie (Melvin) Smith, Melba (Jim) Byrd and Marie (Tracy) Thornton, all of Bristol and Vickie (Keith) Bowen of Dublin, seven sons, David "Buddy" Ammons, Danny (Betty) Ammons, all of Jesup, Donnie (Mary) Ammons, Blackshear, Deryl (Gail) Ammons, Offerman, Paul Ammons and Robert Ammons, both of Bristol and Joe (Brenda) Ammons, Wildwood FL; one sister, Lettie Bennett, Oakland Park FL; 34 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, from the Offerman Baptist Church.

Interment followed in Offerman Cemetery.
