STRAUGHN- Francis Marion Rogers, 85, passed away on Monday June 8, 2015 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. A son of the late George D. and Lilly (Keith) Rogers, Marion was born in Raleigh, Indiana on October 30, 1929. He attended school in Lewisville and graduated from Straughn High School with the class of 1948. Marion was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed basketball and football. During his high school years he was well known for his lightening speed on the basketball court and played on the All Conference Team. He also enjoyed golfing at the American Legion Golf Course in New Castle and Hartley Hills Country Club where he was a former member. He had also coached a Babe Ruth Baseball Team in Cambridge City and was voted Manager of the Year. Marion enlisted into the United States Army and served his country in the 1st Calvary Division during the Korean War. For his honorable service from 1948-1952, Marion was awarded the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge and Korean Service Medal w/ 5 Bronze Battle Stars and discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class. He had worked at PHILCO in Connersville prior to becoming Postmaster at the Straughn Post Office and retired from there in 1989 after 28 years of service. To receive his appointment as Postmaster in 1961, Marion’s name was read on the floor of the United States Congress, unopposed, he received his proclamation signed by President John F. Kennedy. His memberships include the Straughn Community Chapel and a 38 year member of the Knightstown American Legion Post 152. In his leisure, Marion enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, the former Marilyn J. Murphy whom he married in Lewisville on March 23, 1952; 2 children, Michael Rogers of Sellersburg and Melinda Williams of Jacksonville, FL; 2 grandchidren, Michael (Sarah) Rogers II and Tabitha Ann Rogers; 1 great granddaughter, Lyda Rogers; 1 brother, Roscoe Rogers of New Castle; nieces and nephews.

Marion was preceded in death by 4 siblings, Nila Fairchild, Avis Baumgartner, Bess Duckworth and George Lee Rogers.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday June 12, 2015 at the Lewisville Cemetery. Rev. Marion Hickman will officiate. Military Honors will be provided by the Unted States Army Honor Guard and the Knightstown American Legion.
