Max Mitchell age 83 of rural Waynetown/Wingate, died 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 following a lengthy illness in The Waters of Covington. He was born near Wingate, September 17, 1931 son of the late Raymond A. and Lula B. Rodgers Mitchell. He first married Rosemary Potter and they divorced. He later married Jean Lough on October 17, 1969 and she survives.

He grew up in Wingate community and graduated from Wingate High School, where he excelled in sports, especially baseball. Max had a tryout with the Chicago White Sox scheduled, but it was interrupted by his orders to report to the Army. Max traveled as a baseball player for the US Army, remaining state side during Korea. He had the opportunity to play with and against some, who became well known figures in professional baseball.

Max was a self employed carpenter and farmer. He had driven a school bus for Southeastern Fountain Schools, formerly worked at the old Bolt Milling Co. in Waynetown. He had also worked at the Hoosier Pete station in Rob Roy, where it was rumored he carried ‘good, big boom fireworks” on the side. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, mushrooming, square dancing, his large garden, coaching little league and pee wee league ball. His philosophy was, you could hunt and fish in the rain, but not work in the rain! Max never met a stranger, was a colorful character, loved life, was loving, caring, hardworking, a perennial Cubs and Purdue fan, always waiting for next season.
