Louis Leonard Czerniec was born May 11, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Louis Stanley Czerniec and Angeline Dorosz. He grew up at 1856 West 46th Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, as well as 4815 South Kostner Avenue and 4846 South Keeler Avenue in the Archer Heights neighborhood. He attended Kelly High School.

Leonard was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy from July 29, 1944 until May 2, 1946.

He married Shirley Nancy Daniels on September 5, 1959 in Cicero, Illinois. They had five children, two grandchildren (born after his death), and were divorced in 1976.

Leonard was employed by Ace Hardware for thirty years and managed the Kenosha store for ten years. At the time of his death, he was a self-employed business consultant. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Kenosha West.

Leonard and Shirley moved to Kenosha in 1962 after he was asked to revitalize the local Ace Hardware store, which had been struggling. He lived there for the rest of his life and was a communicant of St. Mark Catholic Church in Kenosha.

Leonard passed away on the morning of Wednesday, April 16, 1980 at his home. He resided at 5902 55th Street in Kenosha at the time of his death.

Calling hours were held at Lendman-Mischler Funeral Home, 6019 7th Avenue, Kenosha, on Thursday, April 17, 1980 from 5:00-9:00 p.m., with a prayer vigil service taking place at 6:30 p.m. Leonard's funeral took place on Friday, April 18, 1980. The services commenced at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A funeral mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mark Catholic Church, 7117 14th Avenue, Kenosha.
Leonard was laid to rest following the conclusion of the mass in the All Saints Cemetery, 3300 Springbrook Road, Pleasant Prairie.
