"Three young men from this vicinity have successfully passed rigid physical and mental tests of the Aviation Cadet Examining Boards at Milwaukee and Madison and are well on their way to winning their wings as members of the American Army air forces.

They are Athneil B. Stuebbe of route 3, and James Lynch and Marvin Zoerb of Two Rivers. The young men have received notice that thy passed their examinations and have been instructed to report to their selective service boards for voluntary induction after which they will be assigned to the air forces and sent to an Army camp for basic training and condition."

At the parsonage of the First Presbyterian church at Pratt, Kan., Miss Elenor Grosshuesch became the bride of Lt. Athniel B. Stuebbe on Sunday, Nov. 12. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. B.F. Henry.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Grosshuesch of Newton, and the bridegroom's parents are the Rev. and Mrs. K.J. Stuebbe, also of Newton.

Sgt. and Mrs. Winford R. Miller, former Manitowoc residents, were the couple's only attendants.

Lt. Stuebbe is a navigator on a B-29 bomber. He received his wings in June of this year."

Lt. Col. Athniel B. (A.B.) Stuebbe, USAF (Ret.), 67, of Valders, passed away Wednesday morning, April 10, 1991, at Holy Family Medical Center, Manitowoc. Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church, Newton, Rev. Neale Riffert officiating, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Stuebbe was born Nov. 17, 1923, at Waukon, Iowa, son of the late Rev. Klaus j. and Emma Bosma Stuebbe. His early years were spent in Tripp, South Dakota, where he attended Tripp public schools. In 1939, he moved with his parents to Newton, Wis., where his father became pastor of Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. He attended Lakeland College for two years before entering the service of his country in July, 1943.

He was a navigator on a B-29 bomber, completing 35 missions in the Pacific Theater. he was award the Air Medal, five times and the Distinguished Flying Cross, twice.

On Nov. 12, 1944, he married the former Elenor Grosshuesch at Pratt, Kansas. Most of their married life was spent in the Manitowoc County area.

He received his bachelor of science degree from the university of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1948 and his masters degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958. Advanced studies were done at Chico State College, Chico, Calif.; Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, Philadelphis, Penn., and the University of new Mexico at Albuquerque.

Mr. Stuebbe was a science and chemistry teacher at Mishicot high School, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and Lincoln High Schools, in Manitowoc, before becoming administrator at the Valders Public Schools in 1963, where he served for 18 years before his retirement in 1981. After his retirement as an educator, he was associated with Century 21 Crossroads and First Securities for nine years.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Reserve Officer Association, Valders Lions Club, Manitowoc County Retired Teachers Association, and State Retired Teachers Association. he served for several years on the American Red Cross Board, Family Service Association Board, Manitowoc County Board of Realtors, serving as president in 1987-88. He was the first president of the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers. he was a member of Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church and its Bible class and choir.

Mr. Stuebbe was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Rev. Calvin Stuebbe and a niece.

Survivors include his widow, Elenor of Valders; a son and daughter-in-law, Kay J. and Robert Scheible, of Plymouth;and Bonnie and Patrick Connolly, of Mesa, Ariz., one sister and brother-in-la, Rev. Robert and Vivian Stuebbe of Bakersfield, Calif., and a sister-in-law Mrs. Marie Stuebbe, of Bakersfield, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Sara, Eric and Anne Scheible; Katie and Paul Connoly; and David and Kayla J. Stuebbe, as well as, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Friends may call at Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church on Friday, from 5 p,...m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday, from 9:30 a.m., until the time of services.

Kay J. and Robert Scheible of Plymouth and Bonnie and Patrick Connolly of Mesa,
Ariz.; one sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Robert Horn of Valders; one
brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Robert and Vivian Stuebbe of Bakersfield, Cal.;
and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Marie Stuebbe of Bakersfield, Calif. Also surviving
are seven grandchildren, Sara, Eric and Anne Scheible, Katie and Paul Connolly
and David and Kayla J. Stuebbe as well as nieces and nephews, other relatives
and friends.

Friends may call at Salem Ebenezer Church on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday
from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given in his name.
