Mike graduated from Harrison High School, attended North Arkansas College and went on to manage the Ozark Mountain Smokehouse in Springfield, MO.

He was a businessman and decided to pursue his love for building. He moved to Texas and worked for Lone Star Building Co. in the mill industry going from Dallas to Houston and San Antonio building condos. Since he was born in California, he decided he should live there for a while so he started a plantation shutter business.

Finally he decided he wanted to move back home so he continued his shutter business in Harrison; also working for Phillip Stone as Credit Manager. Next he started S & T Truss Mill on Highway 62 where he was very successful and supplied trusses for many of the theaters in Branson MO where he enjoyed talking about having breakfast with Jim Nabors. He then started another business called First Start Homes where he bought tracts of land and built homes and paved driveways from his secondary driveway business.. After selling those businesses, he started FitFast Truss Mill on Hwy 7 North. This company was the only one in the nation that produced 90 feet trusses. He went on to design an end block for the trusses to make installation easier for builders. Due to declining health, he was forced to leave his business; however, Mike was a very gifted musician. His passion was singing and playing his keyboard for worship services, weddings, special events and fundraisers.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, L.D. Slay; his grandparents, Bobbie and Sammie Beckham Jones and Lowell and Floyce Slay.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Slay Wright; his son, Michael R. Slay, Jr. and his wife, Kelsey; his daughter, Farrah Simmons; his brother, Dave Slay and his wife, Diane; his nephew, Sean Slay and his wife, Amy and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to House of Hope, 600 E. Stephenson, Harrison, AR 72601 a charity which was dear to his heart.
