Obituary, Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA), 31 May 2015:

Andrew Allan Morse March 2, 1949 - May 21, 2015 Resident of Lafayette

Andrew Allan Morse, a long-time resident of Lafayette and a residential developer and contractor, died unexpectedly on May 21, 2015, at the age of 66 while flying his small plane. He was a pilot for 33 years; flying was one of his great passions. Andrew is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jo Ann Morse (Herbert); his children, Colin Richard and Eric Andrew; his mother, Denise; his brother, Matthew (Susan); mother-in-law, Alice Herbert; sister and brother in laws, Geraldine Brayton (Paul), Thomas Herbert, Mary Downie (Terry), Madonna Borck, and Christine Goff; and his beloved dog, Ellie. He is predeceased by his father, Richard A. Morse. Andrew was born in Altadena, CA. When he was young, he moved with his family to Portland and then to Connecticut where he learned to sail and ski with his father. The family moved to Menlo Park in the mid-sixties; he was a 1967 graduate of Woodside High School. Andrew attended UC Davis obtaining his Bachelor's in Political Science in 1971. After a brief journey to Columbia University in New York, he returned to California to explore his career path while working in Davis and Lake Tahoe to perfect his trade skills. He met his wife, Jo Ann, at a party with UC Davis friends in 1976. Subsequently, through a mutual friend, they coincidently both secured jobs at Rubicon on Lake Tahoe; the relationship took hold from there. After moving to Davis, Andrew obtained his contracting license and Jo Ann got her real estate license. After building and selling his first home in Davis, Andrew and Jo Ann moved to Oakland in 1978 to enable him to receive his MBA from San Francisco State. He continued to work as a commercial developer in the Berkeley and Oakland area. At that time his wife left her career at U.C. Berkeley to join him in the growing construction company. They welcomed their two sons Colin and Eric in 1981 and 1984 respectively. They built their first spec house in Sanders Ranch, Moraga, before moving to Lafayette in 1988. Through the years he continued to develop and sell houses in Orinda, Happy Valley, Concord, Walnut Creek, Clayton, Antioch, and Martinez. Andrew was a devoted father to his two sons. He spent their younger years coaching soccer and baseball; refereeing LMYA soccer; and serving on the Board of Directors of the Lafayette Little League. For ten years, he was very involved in Boy Scout Troup #241 as the parent coordinator. One of his favorite Boy Scout activities was marshalling the boys through the rugged 50-miler hike in the Sierras. He looked forward to this every year; however, you could be certain to never find Andrew building or sleeping in a snow cave during the yearly scouts' snow camping trip. As the boys grew older, he made the decision to join the ski patrol at Sugar Bowl, working towards the qualifications for National Ski Patrol. He obtained his auxiliary status in 1995 and spent a large portion of his time attending to skiers' medical injuries as well as patrolling the mountain. He patrolled for close to 15 years. In 2002, he was awarded the National Ski Patrol System's National Outstanding Auxiliary patroller for the Far West Division. Afterward, he volunteered for the Royal Gorge Cross Country ski area for two years. He and Jo Ann enjoyed traveling, visiting Thailand, Mexico, Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean throughout the years. They also both enjoyed gardening; he was especially proud of his edible grapes, making Andy's Jelly as gifts. He was an avid road and mountain biker, building his own 11 speed Carbon Fiber road bike which he loved riding around Lamorinda. Andrew was loved by many friends, colleagues, and neighbors. For the 27 years he lived on Stow Lane, one of his main concerns was preserving the condition of the private lane for the thirty-some households residing on the street. He attended numerous city meetings regarding traffic, safety and new construction. He oversaw the paving and sealing of the private road. He was nicknamed by many as the "Mayor of Stow Lane." Andrew was always ready and willing to help family and friends with home emergencies or repair advice. He was somewhat of a "MacGyver" and "Mr. Fixit". What appealed to so many people was his wonderful sense of humor; he was always sharing interesting stories and his positive outlook on life. He had a heart of gold and was very generous with his time. A Celebration of His Life will be held on Saturday, June 27th at 3 p.m. with a reception afterward at Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pilots for Paws, 4651 Howe Road, Landrum, South Carolina 29356. www.pilotsnpaws.org/donate/ .
