Mona Lee Barnes was born the daughter of Monte and Hazel (Smith) Nelson in Omaha, Nebraska on July 28, 1931. She died at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa on August 18, 2011 at the age of 80 years and 21 days.

Mona Lee grew up in Greenfield and received her education from the Dexter Community School. She married Ernest "Buck" Barnes in Hiawatha, Kansas at the age of 15. This union was blessed with two daughters: Patricia and Beth.

Mona Lee and "Buck" moved to Stuart and farmed for a few years and eventually moved to Redfield. Mona worked for many years as a nurses aid at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines and at Community Care Center in Stuart. She and "Buck" also owned and operated two restaurants in Redfield; "The Feed and Grain" and "Little Bucky's Pizza". Mona Lee retired in early 1990. Mona Lee was an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She did travel occasionally to family in Dallas, TX, however preferred spending time in her own home.

Mona Lee leaves the following family to celebrate her life: daughter Patricia Barnett of Stuart; 7 grandchildren: Shonda Pivonka; Jeremy Wolfe; Danielle Sanchez; Christopher Barnett; Monte Hopkins; Matt Hopkins; Adam Hopkins and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mona Lee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband "Buck" in 2000 and her daughter Beth Hopkins in 1998.
