William Chamberlain Gardner was born in Delaware, Delaware, Ohio, the son of Aaron Bolivar & Elmyra Messenger (Joy) Gardner. He married Ada Alice Owen on the 13th of May, 1877 in Billings. W. C. and Ada had nine children: Infant son, Rose Ellen, Julia Pearl, Ivey Messenger, Elmyra, Lura, Clement Owen, Bessie Loraine, and William Lawrence. He was a successful farmer and merchant in Billings, Missouri. He and the children still at home moved to Covington, Oklahoma about 1907, but returned to Billings where he died in 1926.
