C. C. Gourley Dies at Home of Son Friday Eve

Born at Madison in 1843 - Lived Whole Life in Indiana.

Christopher C. Gourley, a veteran of the Civil War, passed away at 9:50 o'clock Friday evening at the home of his son, Clarence and family on South Edwards Street, Franklin, after an illness that has extended over several months. He was not regarded as being in a critical condition however until within the past few days.

Funeral services will be held from the son's home, number 253 South Edwards Street, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Bernard P. Smith, pastor of the Franklin Christian Church will be in charge of the services.

Mr. Gourley was born in Madison, Indiana, May 31st, 1843. On the death of his parents when he was but a few years of age, he went to Brown County at the age of nine years to make his home with his grandfather. He was reared to manhood by his grandparent. When he was eighteen years of age he moved to Johnson County and had lived in this county ever since.

In 1863 he enlisted in the Union Army and served with distinction until the close of the war. After he was mustered out of the service, he returned to Johnson County and took up his residence in the Pisgah community. There he was united in marriage to Miss Susan Shumaker. They were married in December and she died in the following February.

On April 14th, 1874, he was again united in marriage, this time to Miss Mary A. True of the Pisgah community and to this union eight children were born, six of who survive. Mrs. Gourley died several years ago. The surviving children are, Clarence of Franklin; Lawrence of Kokomo; C. C. Junior of Edinburg; George of Anderson; Mrs. Minnie Deer of Mooresville and Mrs. Mattie Simpson of Indianapolis. He is also survived by two half brothers, Clarence of Madison, and Thomas of Indianapolis.

Late in life, Mr. Gourley was married a third time to Mrs. Joanna Simpson Deer. They were married on December 17, 1916, and Mrs. Gourley died on February 9th, 1923. Since that time he had been living with his son, Clarence, here in Franklin and with his son, C. C. Junior, of Edinburg.

Early in life, Mr. Gourley united with the Pisgah Christian Church and he had always retained his membership there. As long as his health permitted he was always a faithful attendant at the services of the church. He was also a member of the Wadsowth Post of the G. A. R.

Funeral C. C. Gourley Held This Afternoon

Services are in Charge of Wadsworth Post of the G. A. R.

A large circle of friends attending the funeral services for the late Christopher C. Gourley which were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his son. J. C. Gourley, on South Edwards Street. The services were in charge of Rev. Bernard P. Smith, pastor of the Franklin Christian Church. The ritualistic service of the G. A. R. was read by members of the Wadsworth Post. Mr. Gourley was long a member of the local post.

Music was furnished by Mrs. William R. Johnson and Mrs. Susan Flinn. The casket bearers were W. T Vandegriff, Marry G. Walden, J. W. Patterson, James H. Dresslar, Hugh A. Payne, Carl Baumgart. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Gourley died at the home of his son last Friday evening after illness of several days.
