PAWLEYS ISLAND - Nellie Smith Jordan died April 24, 2015, at the age of 97. Born February 11, 1918, in Anderson County, SC, she was the daughter of Ellie Davis Smith and William Pickens Smith and the youngest of four children. She graduated from Greenville High School (1936) and Draughon's Business College (1938). In 1939, she married Ramon L. Jordan, now deceased. She is survived by her three children: Annette J. O'- Neill of Asheville, Jerry Jordan of Charleston, and Linda E. Jordan of Pawleys Island, and by four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Nellie worked as a financial secretary at the Charleston Navy Yard, Donaldson Air Force Base, Furman University, and First Baptist Church of Columbia. She was honored by First Baptist for her 18 years of service upon her retirement in 1983. She lived in West Columbia for 43 years prior to moving to Pawleys Island in 2008.

She loved traveling, singing in the church choir at First Baptist where she was a member, watching sports on TV, eating out with friends, and exercising at Tri-City Leisure Center. She maintained her fierce independence until the end. Her abiding faith guided her through the seasons of her life. Whatever the circumstances, Nellie was always "Fine and Dandy," and so she will be always.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Celestial Memorial Gardens in West Columbia. Gifts designated in her memory may be sent to the Music Ministry, First Baptist Church, or to the National Park Foundation, 1110 Vermont Ave., NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005 (202-796-2539).
