Maria Telemann (also recorded as Johanna Maria) was the mother of the German Baroque master musician and composer Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767).

Maria was the daughter of the pastor Johann Haltmeier and his wife Sophie Himsel. She was baptized - perhaps on the day of her birth - on March 14 at Markt Alvensleben, where her father served as pastor of the Sankt-Jacobi Church (Marktkirche) until his death in 1664. On May 1 of 1670, at nearby Hakeborn, she married Heinrich Telemann. The couple's first four children were born at Hakeborn.

In 1676 the family moved to Magdeburg, where Heinrich Telemann served as deacon and preacher at the Church of the Holy Spirit. Another three children were born to them there. When her husband died in January 1685, Maria took on the raising and education of their three surviving children. Her famous younger son Georg Philipp attributed his natural musical talent to his mother and her side of the family.

At the time of her death she lived at Wormstedt in the household of her elder son Heinrich Matthias Telemann (1672-1746) who was serving as pastor of the local church.

She was buried in the churchyard, as was known from the parish burial register, which stated:

"Den 15. December ist Frau Maria Herrn Henricini Telemann sel: Diaconus zum H. Geist in Magdeburg nachgelaßene Witt. bey ihrem Sohn allhier dem Pastor Substitutus gestorben und drauff d. 20h. begraben worden ihres Alters 70 Jahre weniger 3 Monate und 10 Tage"

(Mrs. Maria, the surviving widow of Mr. Heinrich Telemann, deacon of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Magdeburg, who died on the 15th of December (1711) at the home of her son the Substitute Pastor here, and was buried afterwards on the 20th. 3 Months and 10 Days short of reaching the age of 70 years.*)

(*Note that this age calculation is incorrect according to Maria's birth date and baptismal date as given in the parish registers both at Alvensleben and Wormstedt.)

Her gravestone was found in the Fall of 2005, broken in two and together with other stones, only a few yards from its original location near the wall of the cemetery. The gravestone was brought into the church in 2005 to preserve it from further weathering, and has been restored.

In April of 1717 Georg Philipp Telemann stayed with his brother at Wormstedt, where he composed the cantata "Wer will uns scheiden von der Liebe Gottes". Pastor Heinrich Telemann remained at Wormstedt until his death on June 14, 1746.

The little church at Wormstedt may be one of the few remaining venues - untouched by the destruction of WWII - where Telemann's music was likely to have been performed by him, or under his direction.
