Delia Ida Steele, the daughter of James and Helena Wagner Borland, was born May 21, 1892 near Peterson, Iowa, in Clay County. She attended rural school near her childhood home and Peterson High School.
She was united in marriage to Silas Frank Steele January 28, 1913 at Peterson. They started farming near Laurens for two years and then moved to Sutherland where she lived the remainder of her life on the family farm. She was a homemaker and mother and her chief joys were her family, gardening and her pets.
She passed away at Millies Rest Home in Sutherland on May 1, 1988, at the age of 95. Preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Harold in 1964; her husband in 1967; one son-in-law, Herbert Kruckenberg in 1978; a brother, Dick; a sister, Belle French; and a sister in infancy.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Ruth (Mrs. Wayne) Gillespie of Hartley and Delia Kruckenberg of Sutherland; two sons and their wives: Silas and Doris and Robert and Maxine, all of Sutherland; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis Steele of Rochester, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
