Benjamin T. (Ben) Childers was born in McCall, ID on July 5, 1974 and went to be with his Heavenly Father on May 30, 2015 as the result of a 4 wheeler accident. He was enjoying the mountains and great outdoors with friends near Bear, ID at the time of the accident.

Ben went to school in Council, graduating in 1992 and took various classes from Boise State University and the University of Idaho as he was working.

He was a very ambitious young man and always seemed to be working a job. A couple of his favorites were working for Jerry & Bonnie Rosengrant at Jerry’s Auto Parts and Bud & Margaret Thomason where he became part of the family.

One of our favorite work memories was when people started calling to order winter wood. Seems Ben had run an ad in the local newspaper offering to sell firewood. He was “testing the market” he said, and orders poured in. There were just two little problems……..he had no pickup and no chainsaw. His dad came to the rescue and they worked together until every order was filled.

Ben worked in the service department at Roundtree Chevrolet in Boise after high school and later put in several years as an estimator for Idaho Sand & Gravel. In addition to being an estimator Ben was project manager and oversaw the Nampa Caldwell Blvd project, jobs at the INEL, Gowen Field, Hwy 95 rebuild to Riggins, and many others.

In 1998, Ben married Kari Campbell Dekker from Cambridge and they moved to Meridian. They had two daughters, Hannah Marie and Caitlin Elizabeth. Ben took on Kari’s sons as his own, Reid & Preston.

Ben moved his family to Stayton, OR in 2001 when he became an estimator for North Santiam Paving. He always said that Ralph Bochsler was one of the best bosses he ever had as he learned so much and had a lifelong friend.

In later years Rudeen Development out of Seattle, WA hired Ben to be one of their top project managers overseeing large commercial and residential developments. This job took Ben all over the western United States as he managed projects in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Texas, and California. He was proud of his accomplishments but always felt he could do better on the next one.

In 2011 Ben suffered a major heart attack and stroke. From then until his death he faced continuing health challenges and constant pain. Ben showed us how to live strong in spite of your personal struggles.

After Ben and Kari separated and divorced he moved back home to Idaho. At the time of his death he was working on multiple projects in Idaho and Texas.

Ben enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking, gardening, and working to make the family home nice. Raising beef, pork and chickens to share gave him a great deal of satisfaction. He got a kick out of delivering eggs to his neighbors and Father Ed.

No one was a stranger to Ben and he worked to maintain every friendship he made. He had a very generous heart, was kind, loving, a great friend, loving father, son, and brother. Ben laughed easily and we loved his sense of humor. Regardless of what was going on in his life, Ben maintained his smile and positive attitude, always lifting up those around him.

One of Ben’s greatest motivators was feeling responsible for all of his family and friends. He was always trying to help people in any way possible.

Ben is survived by his daughters, Hannah & Caitlin; stepsons, Reid & Preston; grandchildren: Natalie, Collin and Madalyn; parents, Derrell & Peggy; brothers: Travis Childers and Frank (Karla) Bishop; sisters: Deneen (Ed) Longley & Denell Childers; grandmother, Esther Stover; birth father, Troy (Nancy) Schwartz; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews; and a host of wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John Stover; and paternal grandparents, Clarke & June Childers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ben’s name to Regis High School, 550 N Regis St, Stayton, OR 97383.

Private family graveside services pending. There will be a Memorial Bereavement Dinner held in Council on Saturday, June 13th, at 12:00 noon at the Council Senior Citizen Center.

Arrangements under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home.
